Engine

Published limits

Fair use
Up to 4 conversions per 10 minutes per visitor; one media job runs at a time
Your file
Uploaded over HTTPS directly into a randomly named, permission-restricted operating-system temporary directory (not accumulated in application memory). FFmpeg and ffprobe use that isolated job directory; normal cleanup removes it after the response finishes, fails, is cancelled or times out. Startup and five-minute sweeps remove crash leftovers once they are older than the request-wide deadline; files are never intentionally retained.
Good to know
Media is re-encoded: MP4 uses H.264 (CRF 23, yuv420p) with AAC 128 kbps stereo; MP3 uses 192 kbps stereo. Only the first relevant video/audio streams are kept. Metadata, chapters, subtitles, artwork and additional streams are removed.

How to convert WebM to MP4

  1. Click Choose file (or drag & drop) and select one WebM file. Media jobs run one at a time so the server can give each conversion predictable CPU and memory.
  2. No hidden quality choice: profile 1.0.0 writes H.264 CRF 23/yuv420p video and 128 kbps stereo AAC, then ffprobe reopens the output and checks codecs and duration.
  3. Press Convert to MP4. The file is converted with a live progress indicator.
  4. Open the download page to save the converted file and review or export its verification report.

Why convert WebM to MP4?

Browsers, screen recorders and meeting tools often create WebM files, while editors, messaging apps, televisions and upload forms commonly expect MP4. This is a real transcode — not an extension rename: FFmpeg decodes the source and writes H.264 video with AAC audio, then ffprobe reopens the result to verify the promised streams and duration.

What this tool preserves — and what it changes

✓ Preserved

  • The primary video and audio timeline; ffprobe compares input and output duration and refuses a result outside the published tolerance
  • Display aspect ratio and visible frame geometry; odd dimensions are padded by at most one pixel so H.264/yuv420p remains valid
  • Silent video remains silent — an audio stream is optional rather than fabricated

↺ Changed

  • Video is decoded and encoded as H.264 at CRF 23 in yuv420p; source audio, when present, becomes 128 kbps stereo AAC
  • The conversion is lossy, and existing WebM compression artifacts are carried into the new encode
  • WebM metadata, alpha, subtitles, chapters and additional streams are not copied

When this result can be wrong or withheld

  • Only the first video and first audio stream are selected
  • Broken timestamps can produce a duration or sync difference; output outside 250 ms or 1% is withheld
  • The extension and EBML file signature must agree, and the finished MP4 is reopened with ffprobe before download
  • No output is returned if it exceeds 160 MB or the complete upload, conversion, verification and response cannot finish within the 8 minute request deadline.

No confidence score is invented: transcoding is deliberately lossy, so the defensible result is a set of pass/fail structural checks, not “97% accurate.” Your download page exposes the same per-job evidence report as JSON and CSV. See the method, limitations and six-case comparison, or download the anonymous CSV / JSON dataset.

About the formats

What is a WebM file?

WebM is the browser-native media container used by screen recorders, webcam apps, meeting tools and web downloads. It commonly carries VP8 or VP9 video with Opus or Vorbis audio. Browsers handle it well, but many phone editors, televisions, messaging apps and upload forms still require MP4 or MP3 instead.

What is an MP4 file?

MP4 is the safest delivery container for video. The widely supported combination is H.264 picture with AAC sound, which plays on current phones, browsers, televisions and editing apps. MP4 can contain other codecs too, so a genuine compatibility conversion must inspect and encode the streams rather than merely rename the extension.

A browser recording that can travel

WebM is the natural output of browser screen recorders, webcam apps, Chromebooks and many online meeting tools. It plays beautifully where it was created, then often stops at the next boundary: a phone editor refuses it, a social upload form wants MP4, or a television sees no playable video. H.264 video with AAC audio inside MP4 is the practical delivery combination for crossing those boundaries.

This conversion does more than change a filename. FFmpeg decodes the WebM picture and sound and writes new streams, so some generation loss is unavoidable; fine screen text and fast motion are the first places worth checking. Keep the WebM as the source, open the MP4 from beginning to end, and use the converted copy for distribution rather than treating it as a new editing master.

Frequently asked questions

Is this WebM to MP4 converter free?

Yes — there is no sign-up, payment or watermark. The published safeguards are 100 MB input, a 160 MB output cap, a 10 minute selected-stream limit, an 8 minute request-wide deadline and four jobs per visitor per 10 minutes; they are technical limits, not a paid tier.

Can I convert multiple WebM files at once?

Media files are handled one at a time. That makes the documented CPU, memory and cleanup limits enforceable and gives the next file a clean job directory. Finish or clear the current file before adding another.

Is my media file uploaded to a server?

Yes. Native FFmpeg is too large and resource-intensive for a reliable browser-only conversion, so this tool sends the file over HTTPS to our server. It is limited to 100 MB and 10 minutes and uses an isolated temporary job directory. Normal cleanup removes that directory after success, failure, cancellation or timeout; startup and five-minute sweeps remove a forced-crash leftover once it is older than the request deadline. Media files are never intentionally retained.

Can I convert WebM to MP4 just by renaming the file?

No. WebM and MP4 are different containers and usually carry different codecs. Renaming only changes the label; this tool decodes the source and writes a genuine MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio.
