Good to know
Redacted pages are flattened to images so the hidden text is truly gone — those pages lose selectable text (unmarked pages keep it).

How to redact a PDF

  1. Click Choose file (or drag & drop) and select the PDF you want to redact.
  2. The page opens in an editor. Drag a box over anything to remove — a name, a number, a paragraph. Use Prev / Next to move between pages; each box has a × to delete it.
  3. Press Apply redactions. Every page you marked is flattened so the hidden content is physically gone; unmarked pages keep their selectable text.
  4. Download the redacted PDF from the download page.

Why true redaction matters

The classic redaction disaster is a black rectangle drawn over text that anyone can still select and copy underneath. This tool does it properly: draw boxes over anything sensitive, and every page you mark is flattened to an image with the boxes burned in, so the underlying words and data are physically gone from the file. Pages you do not touch keep their crisp, selectable text.

What this tool preserves — and what it changes

✓ Preserved

  • Unmarked pages completely — they are copied at the object level and keep whatever selectable text and vector quality they had
  • Page size and count: each flattened page is re-embedded at its original dimensions
  • Privacy end to end: drawing, flattening and verification all happen in this tab — the file is never uploaded

↺ Changed

  • Every page you draw a box on is re-rendered at 200 DPI (oversized pages are capped at 5,000 px on the long side) and flattened to a JPEG with the boxes burned in — the text and objects underneath are physically deleted, not covered
  • Flattened pages lose selectable text and can grow in size — the usual cost of a 200-DPI page image (see the Labs report linked below)
  • The output is a freshly rebuilt document, so the source's bookmarks and document metadata (author, title) are not carried over — for a redaction, arguably a feature

Known limits & edge cases

  • Every redaction is self-verified: the tool re-opens its own output and requires an empty text layer on each marked page — if any text survived, nothing is saved and you get an error instead
  • Password-protected PDFs are refused — unlock first, then redact
  • Boxes are opaque black and redaction is per-page: content on pages you did not mark (including white or hidden text there) is left untouched

Engine: pdf.js renders the pages you mark; pdf-lib rebuilds the file with those pages flattened to images. These statements describe the engine as shipped on 2026-10-02 — behaviour changes are recorded in the changelog. Measured data: What DPI really costs: rendering a PDF to images at 72 / 150 / 300.

About the formats

What is a PDF file?

PDF is the universal document format: it locks layout, fonts and images so a file looks identical on every device and printer. Scans, invoices, forms, e-books and reports all travel as PDF. Because a PDF is a container rather than an image, turning its pages into JPG or PNG pictures — or bundling pictures into a PDF — are among the most common file tasks there are.

Removal, not concealment

The redaction failures that make headlines share one mistake: black rectangles drawn over text that is still underneath — one copy-paste away from disclosure. True redaction removes content. Here you drag boxes over anything to strike — names, account numbers, whole paragraphs — and when you apply, every marked page is flattened so the covered content is physically gone from the file, not hidden behind a shape.

The design is precise about scope: pages you marked are flattened; untouched pages keep their selectable text. Work methodically — use Prev/Next to walk every page, remember that the same name tends to recur, and check headers, footers and margins where identifying details hide. Then test like an adversary: try to select or search for the redacted text in the output. Silence is compliance.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Redact PDF tool free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermarks and no daily quota. Processing happens in this browser, so the practical limit is the memory available on your device.

Can I redact more than one page?

Yes — use Prev and Next to move through the document and draw black-out boxes on any pages you need. Only the pages you actually mark are flattened; every other page keeps its original selectable text.

Is the hidden text really gone, or just covered?

Really gone — on any page you mark, the tool rebuilds that page as a flattened image with the black boxes baked in, so there is no text or object left behind the box to select, copy or recover. That is the difference between real redaction and simply drawing a rectangle.
