Measurements, not folklore

Conversion Labs

Every report follows the same rules: the numbers come from the same converter code or fixed profile used for visitor jobs, the exact runtime engine and environment are recorded, the limitations are listed without cosmetics, and the raw data downloads as CSV and JSON. A later FFmpeg build may encode different bytes, so each live media job reports its own runtime version. When something cannot be measured, we say so instead of estimating.

Which image format for which content — measured on four content types

At one comparable quality setting, how do JPEG, WebP and PNG compare across the four kinds of picture people actually convert — and what does each cost you in transparency?

What it foundWebP was smaller than JPEG on all four content types at the same quality setting: 31% smaller on the photo, 35% on the screenshot, 36% on the transparent logo and 57% on the flat illustration.

The quality ladder: what each step actually costs

As you push the quality slider from 50 to 100, how fast does the file grow for JPEG and for WebP — and is the top of the slider ever worth it?

What it foundWebP was smaller than JPEG at every step of the ladder on both images — by 57% at quality 50 on the texture image, and by roughly 30–40% throughout on the text page.

What DPI really costs: rendering a PDF to images at 72 / 150 / 300

When you convert PDF pages to images, how fast does file size grow with DPI — and how much bigger than the source PDF do the images get?

What it foundThe 60 KB source PDF became 2.5 MB of images at 72 DPI — a 42x increase before the resolution is even comfortable to read.

File Intelligence release fixtures — 41 published checks

Do the eight File Intelligence tools still produce the exact findings, checksums, abstentions and evidence behavior described on their public pages?

What it foundAll 41 deterministic fixtures pass against version 1.0.0 of the public browser engine.

Media conversion compatibility profile — six real FFmpeg cases

Do all six media tools produce the exact container, codecs and duration behaviour published on their pages?

What it foundAll six fixtures passed signature inspection, output ffprobe, a complete output decode, promised-codec verification and the duration-tolerance check.
