How to scan a file for viruses online

Check a downloaded file before deciding how to handle it. This online malware scanner uses ClamAV on our server and returns a private report in your browser.

Get started in three steps

  1. Choose one file up to 25 MB. Review the upload notice, then select Scan file.
  2. Wait for the upload and ClamAV scan to finish. You can cancel while it is in progress.
  3. Review the verdict, any detection name and the virus definition date. Download the JSON report if you want to keep a record.

What you can do

  • Signature and heuristic scanning with one ClamAV engine.
  • SHA-256 fingerprint, engine version and signature database date in every completed report.
  • No public file hosting or reports. Files are processed temporarily on our server and are not sent to VirusTotal or other analysis services.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a multi-engine service like VirusTotal?

No. This tool uses one ClamAV engine on our server. It does not query VirusTotal, combine other antivirus vendors or execute files in a behavioral sandbox.

Does no threats detected mean the file is safe?

No. It means this engine found no matching threat in the content it could inspect with its current definitions. New malware, unsupported content and evasion can be missed. Keep endpoint protection enabled and do not run files from sources you do not trust.

What happens to the file after scanning?

The application processes the upload in temporary memory. Scanner working files use temporary storage and are removed by the engine after processing. Uploaded files and reports are not published or kept in a document library; reports stay in your browser unless you download them.

Can you scan password-protected archives or unlimited files?

Encrypted content and scan-limit alerts are reported as incomplete. ZIP and gzip expansion is checked separately; archive formats whose full coverage cannot be verified also receive an incomplete result when no threat is found. Uploads are limited to 25 MB and ten scan requests per hour per IP address. Definitions older than seven days cause scanning to be unavailable.
