Good to know
Converting to JPG or lossy WebP applies the quality level you choose. JPG and BMP have no transparency, and our GIF encoder does not carry transparency either — transparent areas are flattened to the background for all three. Animated GIF input is read as its first frame.

How to convert PNG to BMP

  1. Click Choose files (or drag & drop) and select one or more PNG files. You can also paste an image from your clipboard.
  2. No settings needed for this conversion — the defaults handle everything.
  3. Press Convert to BMP. Each file is converted with a live progress indicator.
  4. Open the download page to save your files individually or grab everything as a single ZIP.

Why convert PNG to BMP?

BMP is the lowest common denominator many device toolchains expect. Transparent PNG areas are flattened onto a background color you pick, and the result is a raw bitmap compatible with even the oldest software.

What this tool preserves — and what it changes

✓ Preserved

  • Pixel dimensions and colors — the bitmap is rebuilt from the decoded PNG pixel by pixel
  • Sharp graphic edges — there is no lossy step on this path

↺ Changed

  • Transparency is flattened onto the background color you pick (white by default): 24-bit BMP has no alpha channel
  • File size grows — PNG's compression is undone into raw rows
  • Indexed or grayscale PNGs come out as full 24-bit color: simpler for old software, larger on disk

Known limits & edge cases

  • Soft anti-aliased edges are baked against the chosen background color — pick the color the image will sit on
  • An animated PNG (APNG) contributes only its first frame

About the formats

What is a PNG file?

PNG is a lossless image format that preserves every pixel exactly as it was saved. It supports full alpha transparency, which makes it the standard for logos, icons, screenshots and any graphic that must keep sharp edges and clean text. PNG files are larger than JPG for photos, but they never lose quality no matter how many times they are re-saved.

What is a BMP file?

BMP is an uncompressed raster format created by Microsoft for Windows. Every pixel is stored raw, so files are large but completely lossless and extremely simple to read, which is why old software, scanners, embedded devices and some industrial tools still produce or require BMP files. Converting BMP to JPG or PNG typically shrinks the file by 90% or more.

The uncompressed handoff

Converting PNG to BMP is about meeting old software on its own terms. Boot screens and splash images for embedded firmware, resources compiled into legacy Windows applications, test patterns for display hardware, assets for retro game engines — these pipelines frequently insist on device-independent bitmaps because a raw pixel grid is trivial for minimal code to parse. This tool unwraps the PNG’s compression and writes exactly that.

The conversion is lossless in both directions of thinking: pixels are identical, only the container changes. Note that classic BMP handles transparency poorly — most consumers ignore alpha channels — so transparent PNG regions are flattened in practice; design accordingly if the target system composites the image. And since BMP files balloon quickly with resolution, downsize the PNG first if the destination has memory limits, which embedded targets usually do.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PNG to BMP converter free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermarks and no daily quota. Processing happens in this browser, so the practical limit is the memory available on your device.

Can I convert multiple PNG files at once?

Yes. Select or drop as many files as you like — each one is converted in sequence with its own progress status, and you can download the results individually or all together as a ZIP archive.

Will I lose quality converting PNG to BMP?

No — BMP is a lossless format, so the converted file reproduces the decoded image pixel for pixel. No additional compression artifacts are introduced by the conversion.
