Why convert ICO to PNG?
ICO files cannot be opened by most editors. This tool pulls the largest image out of the icon container and saves it as a regular PNG with transparency, so you can edit, resize or reuse an icon you no longer have the source for.

What this tool preserves — and what it changes
✓ Preserved
- The icon's transparency, in a normal PNG any editor opens
- The largest image stored in the container — our ICO parser scans every directory entry and picks the biggest one
↺ Changed
- Only one image comes out: the other sizes stored in the same ICO are not extracted
- The result is a standalone PNG at the icon's stored pixel size — no upscaling is applied
Known limits & edge cases
- Both storage flavors are handled: PNG-compressed entries decode directly, and classic DIB (BMP-style) entries are rebuilt with a proper BMP header — including correcting the doubled AND-mask height — before decoding
- A file that is not really an ICO fails with a clear 'could not be parsed' message, and the inspection card shows what it actually is
Engine: Your browser's own image decoder and canvas encoders (AVIF included); HEIC decodes via a bundled JavaScript decoder (Emscripten-compiled libheif); GIF, BMP and ICO are written by our own encoders. These statements describe the engine as shipped on 2026-10-02 — behaviour changes are recorded in the changelog.

Getting an icon back out of the .ico box
ICO is a container format most editors won’t open and most platforms won’t accept as an upload — inconvenient when the only copy of a logo you can find is a favicon, or when documentation needs a picture of an application’s icon. This tool decodes the ICO and hands you a PNG, transparency intact, that every design tool, wiki and chat app understands.
It’s a small conversion with regular real-world uses: auditing a competitor’s brand assets, rebuilding a lost logo from a site’s favicon, embedding tool icons in internal docs and runbooks, or migrating a legacy application’s resources to a modern build. Icons are small by nature — a 32-pixel source stays 32 pixels, so for print or large display you’ll want to track down the original artwork rather than upscale.
Frequently asked questions
Is this ICO to PNG converter free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermarks and no daily quota. Processing happens in this browser, so the practical limit is the memory available on your device.
Can I convert multiple ICO files at once?
Yes. Select or drop as many files as you like — each one is converted in sequence with its own progress status, and you can download the results individually or all together as a ZIP archive.
Will I lose quality converting ICO to PNG?
No — PNG is a lossless format, so the converted file reproduces the decoded image pixel for pixel. No additional compression artifacts are introduced by the conversion.
