Good to know
Converting to JPG or lossy WebP applies the quality level you choose. JPG and BMP have no transparency, and our GIF encoder does not carry transparency either — transparent areas are flattened to the background for all three. Animated GIF input is read as its first frame.

Why convert GIF to PNG?

GIF stickers and graphics often carry transparency that JPG would destroy. PNG keeps the transparent background and reproduces the limited GIF palette exactly, making it the right choice for logos and graphics saved as GIF in the 2000s.

What this tool preserves — and what it changes

✓ Preserved

  • The first frame pixel-for-pixel — palette colors are reproduced exactly, nothing is re-quantized
  • Transparency: the GIF's transparent background carries into the PNG alpha channel

↺ Changed

  • Animation is not carried — a multi-frame GIF becomes one still PNG (the inspection card warns when it counts more than one frame)
  • There is no quality decision on this path; for a single frame both ends are lossless

Known limits & edge cases

  • GIF transparency is all-or-nothing (each pixel fully transparent or fully opaque) — converting to PNG does not invent soft edges
  • The limited palette of 2000s-era GIF graphics is stored exactly — PNG does not restore colors the GIF never had

Engine: Your browser's own image decoder and canvas encoders (AVIF included); HEIC decodes via a bundled JavaScript decoder (Emscripten-compiled libheif); GIF, BMP and ICO are written by our own encoders. About the formats

What is a GIF file?

GIF is one of the oldest image formats still in daily use. It is limited to a palette of 256 colors and supports simple frame-based animation, which made it the format of memes and short looping clips. For still images its color limit shows visible banding on photos, so converting GIFs to JPG or PNG — or building a GIF from a still image — is a very common task.

What is a PNG file?

PNG is a lossless image format that preserves every pixel exactly as it was saved. It supports full alpha transparency, which makes it the standard for logos, icons, screenshots and any graphic that must keep sharp edges and clean text. PNG files are larger than JPG for photos, but they never lose quality no matter how many times they are re-saved.

The cleanest still you can pull from a GIF

Converting a GIF’s first frame to PNG is the lossless option: every pixel and the transparency mask (GIF’s hard on/off transparency) survive exactly. That makes PNG the right choice when the GIF is a graphic rather than a photo — pixel art, an old logo, a button or banner from a legacy site — and you want to edit it, upscale it deliberately, or place it in a document without introducing compression smears around the edges.

PNG also upgrades what the format can hold: where GIF caps at 256 colors with 1-bit transparency, PNG supports millions of colors and smooth 8-bit alpha, so any edits you make afterwards aren’t constrained by the source’s limits. As with any GIF conversion here, animated inputs yield the first frame — grab it, clean it up, and the artwork lives on in a modern container.

Frequently asked questions

Is this GIF to PNG converter free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermarks and no daily quota. Processing happens in this browser, so the practical limit is the memory available on your device.

Can I convert multiple GIF files at once?

Yes. Select or drop as many files as you like — each one is converted in sequence with its own progress status, and you can download the results individually or all together as a ZIP archive.

Will I lose quality converting GIF to PNG?

No — PNG is a lossless format, so the converted file reproduces the decoded image pixel for pixel. No additional compression artifacts are introduced by the conversion.
