A free Adobe Acrobat online alternative, without the subscription
Adobe wrote the PDF specification, and Acrobat is the reference implementation of it. These are two different jobs rather than two attempts at the same one.

The difference that is not on the table
Translating a document is the clearest single difference, so here it is in full. iLovePDF gives a free account one translation a day, on a file of up to 15 MB, into 25 languages; after that it runs on AI credits, of which Premium includes 2,000 a month. Here it is unmetered, into 26 languages, on eight kinds of file rather than PDFs alone — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, EPUB, Markdown, plain text, subtitles and PDF — and the first seven of those are rewritten inside the file, so the fonts, tables and layout survive. Both run OCR on a scanned PDF by themselves, so a deck exported as pictures translates without a separate step.
What Adobe Acrobat online does better
Real reasons to use theirs instead.
- No account, no stored files, no share links. There is nothing to log into. Results live in this browser and are replaced by your next conversion, so you cannot come back to a file next week or send someone a link to it. That is the same decision as not uploading your files, seen from the other side.
- No Google Drive or Dropbox picker. Files come from your device and nowhere else. If your documents live in cloud storage, every conversion here starts with a download.
Choose Acrobat when you need to click into a sentence that is already in a PDF and retype a word, when a document has to go out for signature with an audit trail, or when you are already paying for the subscription — in which case the premium tools are not metered for you at all.
Common questions
Is there a free alternative to Adobe Acrobat online?
Yes. Adobe’s free tier allows one transaction every 30 days on its premium tools; everything here is free with no cap. Full Acrobat is a subscription.
Can I edit PDF text without Acrobat?
Not here, and this is worth being straight about. Our editor draws on top of the page — you can add text, boxes, redactions and a signature — but clicking into an existing sentence and retyping a word needs a different kind of engine, and Acrobat has it.
Is my file uploaded to Adobe?
Adobe processes on its servers. For 103 of the 126 tools here the file is never uploaded at all.
Try it on your own file
Nothing here needs an account. Drop a file on the home page and it will show you every conversion that applies to it, or read the full argument and the complete list of our gaps on Why FileHugger.
