Good to know
Converting to JPG or lossy WebP applies the quality level you choose. JPG and BMP have no transparency, and our GIF encoder does not carry transparency either — transparent areas are flattened to the background for all three. Animated GIF input is read as its first frame.

Why convert BMP to PNG?

PNG stores exactly the same pixels as the BMP but compresses them, so nothing is lost and the file still shrinks dramatically. The right choice for screenshots, diagrams and any BMP you may want to edit again later.

What this tool preserves — and what it changes

✓ Preserved

  • Every pixel exactly — BMP is raw and PNG is lossless, so the conversion is bit-faithful to the visible image
  • Dimensions and colors, with no quality decision to make anywhere

↺ Changed

  • Only the storage shrinks: PNG's lossless compression typically cuts the raw bitmap by a large factor without touching a single pixel
  • The output is fully opaque — classic 24-bit BMPs carry no transparency to preserve

Known limits & edge cases

  • Giant scans run into two hard limits — 16,384 px per side and 100 megapixels total — each reported with an explicit message rather than a crashed tab
  • A file wearing the wrong .bmp extension is identified by its content signature and converted as its true format

Engine: Your browser's own image decoder and canvas encoders (AVIF included); HEIC decodes via a bundled JavaScript decoder (Emscripten-compiled libheif); GIF, BMP and ICO are written by our own encoders. About the formats

What is a BMP file?

BMP is an uncompressed raster format created by Microsoft for Windows. Every pixel is stored raw, so files are large but completely lossless and extremely simple to read, which is why old software, scanners, embedded devices and some industrial tools still produce or require BMP files. Converting BMP to JPG or PNG typically shrinks the file by 90% or more.

What is a PNG file?

PNG is a lossless image format that preserves every pixel exactly as it was saved. It supports full alpha transparency, which makes it the standard for logos, icons, screenshots and any graphic that must keep sharp edges and clean text. PNG files are larger than JPG for photos, but they never lose quality no matter how many times they are re-saved.

Same pixels, sane file size

PNG and BMP are both lossless, which makes this conversion a pure win: the image that comes out is pixel-for-pixel identical to the one that went in, but PNG’s DEFLATE compression typically cuts the file to a fraction of the uncompressed BMP — often 70–90% smaller for screenshots, scans and graphics. Nothing is traded away except wasted bytes.

It’s the right upgrade path for material you intend to keep or keep working on: line-art scans, technical drawings, screenshots from old systems, frames exported by industrial or scientific software. PNG opens everywhere BMP does and in far more places besides — browsers included, which BMP support only grudgingly. Where BMP still wins is as an input to certain legacy programs; if a tool demands BMP back, the reverse converter on this site has you covered.

Frequently asked questions

Is this BMP to PNG converter free?

Yes — completely free, with no sign-up, no watermarks and no daily quota. Processing happens in this browser, so the practical limit is the memory available on your device.

Can I convert multiple BMP files at once?

Yes. Select or drop as many files as you like — each one is converted in sequence with its own progress status, and you can download the results individually or all together as a ZIP archive.

Will I lose quality converting BMP to PNG?

No — PNG is a lossless format, so the converted file reproduces the decoded image pixel for pixel. No additional compression artifacts are introduced by the conversion.
